Museum/Theatre Company Present National Theatre Live
Series to kick off with Fela!
Thanks to an exclusive partnership between Arizona Theatre Company, Phoenix Art Museum and National Theatre Live, Valley residents will be able to experience performances from the National Theatre in London – right here in the Valley. National Theatre Live brings the best of British theater to over 300 cinemas around the world via high-definition satellite broadcasts. This season, the second since the program began, includes four diverse productions and launches with Fela! at the Phoenix Art Museum on February 13 at 2pm.
Fela!, a provocative and unique hybrid of dance, theater and music, explores the extravagant, decadent and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Featuring many of Fela Kuti’s most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones’ visionary staging, this original Broadway creation reveals Kuti’s controversial life as an artist and political activist.
In addition to Fela!, the following productions will be shown at Phoenix Art Museum: King Lear (starring Derek Jacobi), February 27; Frankenstein (directed by Danny Boyle), April 3; and The Cherry Orchard, July 24.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.phxart.org or at the Museum’s Visitor Services Desk. Proceeds from National Theatre Live will benefit Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona Theatre Company. For more information about National Theatre Live, visit www.ntlive.com.
Theatre Artists Studio will present the one-woman show, Patti’s Pastiche, starring Valley favorite Patti Davis Suarez, February 18-27. The show is a collection of songs and stories from Broadway and life – some fast, some slow, some true, some not.
Theatre Artists Studio is located at 4848 East Cactus Road, #406, in Scottsdale. For additional information, call 602.765.0120 or visit www.thestudiophx.org.
The Broadway hit 9 to 5: The Musical, which was nominated for four 2009 Tony Awards including Original Score and received a record breaking 15 Drama Desk nominations, will open at ASU Gammage, February 22 and run through February 27.
9 to 5: The Musical is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era; the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do – even in a man’s world.
Tickets are on sale at www.asugammage.com or by calling 1.800.982.2787. ASU Gammage is located on the main campus of Arizona State University in Tempe at Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard.
